I feel pretty strongly that somebody dressing background charectars was like “let’s put a Mexican wrestling mask on this extra.” I really don’t think it was set-up for this episode. I think they just decided to play with it later. Mostly because - no offense wrestlers - those masks look so ridiculous that I can’t imagine PLANNING to build a serious episode around them.
Still. It was a great episode. It’s also kind of surprising that for a show set in California this is the first time an entire culture was dealt with at all.
They’ve really nailed some of their comic delivery. Season Four of Angel got real, real hokey in a hair-pulling kind of way but the “Diablo Robotico” exchanges were kind of a riot.
Like I said, some of their explanations are getting overly complicated - there’s a medallion, the result of a curse, eating specific hearts only, random coming back from the dead - but it’s fine if you just sit back and accept it.
