I’m so angry.
I kind of liked Lies - or I thought I did at the time - but that entry was way angrier because I was so mad after Dirty Girls.
Caleb sucks. SUCKS. HE SUCKS SO BAD SO BAD. And it’s such a great actor WHY ARE THEY MAKING HIM HAVE THAT ACCENT.
Here’s my problems with Caleb:
*Too late, no dice. Your show is at capacity and you just broke back a major and dynamic character from earlier seasons. It is god damn NOT the time to introduce a new bad guy.
*Part of the excitement - for me - about The First was because he/she is incorporeal the fight was going to be more interesting than just punch-kick-stab. I did not need something with fists just to have something with fists.
*They have no idea what they’re talking about with the religious stuff. It is so deeply and profoundly two-dimensional and so cartoony. They’re playing with a stereotype and they’re confused about religious specifics. Write what you know, gang. I’m not certain of the religious affiliation of every single writer here but Joss has always been very vocal about his own beliefs. He speaks like an incredible intelligent person capable of articulating complicated spiritual and philosophical ideas in a succinct, insightful way. But he has an obvious chip on his shoulder about organized religion. I’m not sure what his previous experiences with organized religion are, but this take on Caleb smacks of an outsider. Nothing about Caleb feels like a real person who feels abandoned by God. He feels like a serial killer who happens to be wearing a black and white necklace. Don’t introduce something that loaded and that interesting if you can’t explore it with depth and complicated-ism.
The Potentials were a bad idea. I get how awesome they were in concept but it is like you just added 50 cousins Oliver. When was the last time we saw Anya even? Awful. Awful.
Xander’s speech was wonderful and a reminder that what made Buffy strong and unique was the faith (ha) she inspired in those around her. Too bad she’s been spending so much time fighting with them about Spike and hanging with Principal Wood for that to matter.
Faith is awesome. Faith makes Spike awesome. Spike feeds off other people’s cool or other people’s nerdiness. You need to give him one of them to play with.
